UNE Felt Design Project
Since 2020, we all are living in covid pandemic situation till now. I was planning to make a project to remember this and hope to evoke the truth.
I was planning a design related to COVID, but I couldn’t quite nail one down. Then, inspiration struck when I received a limited edition mask from Kingston x CSD. The design, color, and soft texture of the mask really caught me off guard. That's when the idea of incorporating the nonwoven fabric from the mask onto wool became the foundation for my project.
However, this concept led me to ponder what kind of design would best represent it. On a particularly stressful night, unable to sleep, inspiration hit me around 1 a.m. I quickly turned on the lamp and sketched out the design that had suddenly come to mind. And that's how this project began.
The design continues to incorporate the tiny balls that have become a signature element of my work, using three different shades of pink to emphasize the balls in the background. Within this pink felt, you can also see a face with curly hair.
But why a face? Why these colors? And what do the interconnected hoops signify?
The pandemic has been devastating, disrupting lives across the globe, including those of children. They’re too young to understand what's happening, yet they’ve had to wear masks and miss out on playing in parks. We all know how much children need to run and play—they have boundless energy. Many of us have experienced lockdowns, so I used the hoops to represent being stuck at home, unable to go anywhere.
The pandemic isn’t over yet; we’re still in the fight. I used red balls and cords to create a sad face, emphasizing the struggles we’ve all endured. Yet, we must stay positive and smart, discerning the real news and staying informed. For me, the tassel represents calm and peace.
I kept the printed mask with three keywords: 2020, strength, together. My hope is that we all stay safe and well. Let’s hope this ends soon and that justice prevails.
Peace.
